Who’s the country’s most famous equine patient? Why, Barbaro of course. Since coming up injured in the Preakness, horse racing fans from all over have been sending get well cards. His injury could have very well ended his life, but Barbaro appears to be beating the odds - so far. Barbaro is still at the intensive care unit at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals, getting the royal treatment, but he is making progress.
Dean Richardson, surgeon, is very pleased with the progress Barbaro is making. He said, “This horse has had a remarkably smooth progression of events, he’s just done everything right so far. He’s a lively, bright, happy horse. If you asked me a month ago, I would have gladly accepted where we are today.”
Barbaro has a fiberglass cast that protects his hind right ankle. He is in a spacious and comfortable stall. Most importantly, he is walking around with his pride about him. He knows that he is a champion and it shows. While Barbaro’s racing career is over, he can still have a great life and that’s what we are all hoping for. Barbaro captured the hearts of many around the country and losing him would be a complete disaster for the sport of horse racing. Things are looking great and we hope Barbaro makes a full recovery and has an enjoyable life.
