The fifth race is 5 1/2 furlongs. It’s a $5,000 claiming race for horses that are at least three years old and have never won four races. The field consists of nine horses. Two favorites are Roses Bull (4-1) in the 5 position and Slew of Enerchi (3-1) in the six position. In the one position is Swift Satan, who is listed at 9-2 on the morning line.
Roses Bull is a 4 year old Gelding. His last race was a step down from this one. It was on June 28 at this track. He bested the field in the $3,500 N3L claiming race. He gained the lead midway through and never looked back. He has a great jockey (K D Clark 19%) and trainer (Breaux Samuel 15%) combo. It’s possible that the public will realize the potential of Roses Bull and bet him down. It looks like the move to Evangeline Downs was the trick. He’s won three times in 8 races since moving here. He also has a second and third place finish, so he’s finished in the money 5 of 8 tries.
Slew of Enerchi last raced on June 30 in a $10,000 claiming race. He gave it a good run, but came up well short. He finished fourth—14 lengths off the leader. He got tired and slowed up. Today’s race is pretty much were this horse should be racing. He’s been eaten up at higher levels. He’s had two races at Evangeline Downs and he’s look bad both times.
At 4-1, I like Roses Bull to make a run at winning this race. He is stepping up ever so slightly today, but he should be ready to get the job done.
