This year’s Met Mile at Belmont Park was a thriller for the ages. Silver Train, the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion, won by a head. He stayed just off the pace until the end - when he went for it all. There was a lot of question as to the ability of Silver Train for the Met Mile. He was winless in his last two starts and Silver Train was in danger of falling off the map. Monday’s Met Mile served as notice to all that he was still a good race horse.
The pace was set by Mass Media, who ended up finishing third. Mass Media set a furious pace with times of: 22.74, 44.44 and 1:08.90. For a bit, it looked as if Bandini was in position to challenge for the lead, but he tapered off. For a brief moment it looked as if Silver Train was going to win it handily, but Sun King and jockey Rafael Bejarano would have none of that. Sun King kicked in around the turn and challenged for the lead.
In the end, it was Silver Train’s day. The final finish went 4-2-1 (Silver Train, Sun King and Mass Media). The final payout was:
Silver Train: $6.60 $3.50 $2.90
Sun King: $6.30 $4.80
Mass Media: $5.00
Also Rans (in order of finish): Bandini, Wilko, Sir Greeley, New York Hero
